Lucy is somwhere around 15-16 years old (rescue dog, so this is a best guess) . We have had her for 13 years. She is mostly blind, partially deaf, and has lost most of her teeth. But this little rescue dog is a survivor who was abused horribly before we got her, and she is a tough old girl. Today, she walked outside and decided that she wanted Toby’s breakfast.

Kinja'd!!!

I guess hers wasn’t enough today. Toby is terrified of her (she is very ornery) and had no idea what to do. Daisy tries to steal his food every day, and he chases her away from the bowl.

I think that face says it all. Good thing you got to eat most of it, pal.

For years after I first heard the term “rescue dog” I literally though people were adopting SAR dogs from various fire departments or groups.

I think I was 35 when I realized that “rescue ” just meant “rescue d ” and it was a big facepalm moment, since all of our animals since childhood were adopted/saved....er...rescue(d).

It could be what you thought too, though my understanding is that when a work dog like that retires they try to keep it with it's handler if possible

We are all bad at English. Care-giver and care-taker also mean the same thing, even though giving and taking are antonyms...

What’s funny is that it made sense for years because the dogs were all Labs, Great Danes, etc. Then I started seeing smaller dogs and thinking “Who exactly are they rescuing?” but I never said anything.

I bet anything if your childhood pets were rescues your parents told you something like that to avoid having to explain why someone wouldn’t want to keep their pet. And plus how cute would it be/how excited would a kid be if they thought their dog was an ex-fire or police dog

I just don’t think people used that expression much in the 80s and 90s.

We also still called ourselves pet “owners” and not pet “parents.”

Pets have advanced their status in society over the past couple decades more than any other group, including all human minorities.

We have three rescue dogs - large (lab), medium (beagle mix), and small (???).  Two came from animal rescue groups, and the small one was picked up by the wife and middle child from Texas Motor Speedway as someone left her there after one of the races. I wanted to give that one a car-related name, but was overruled so she’s Gypsie.

It’s funny to me how the relative sizes of these animals often has nothing to do with their social interactions and pecking order.

Man, you just described my Jack Russel. He was probably blind, deaf, had lost most of his teeth and had a bad stumbling/walking problem. Died in an accident a week before his 17th birthday.
